( this Game Review is in progress….and will be updated with a Game Score & final thoughts next week)

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance you play as Henry, the son of a blacksmith. After your village was attacked and your parents killed, you want to avenge their death.

The first few hours starts off like most RPGs for me, some smaller side quests and somehow never having enough coin to pay for what I want, and what I wanted was to not have to fight a villager to “convince” him to pay he debt. I sold my boots for which I thought would be short-term and I would quickly replace them. I finished the quest which still lead into a brawl and I quickly realized that this wasn’t Skyrim and fighting, and almost everything in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is more realistic; the combat is slower, you have to time your attack’s, you have to keep moving so you don’t get hit—strife to into a opening. But we will get into controls and such in a bit.

Things to keep it mind on what the game is: this is not a fantasy game, it is set in the early 15th century in the Kingdom of Bohemia and has accurate historic moments in the game. It is pretty much a medieval sim of sorts as almost everything you do will spend stamina, you need to eat and sleep; is you don’t eat, Henry could die from hunger. Bathing from time to time will be needed, weapons and armor maintained!…if you are still here after that, then this might be a game for you. I have about seven hours into the game so far, and the pace is slow. It took two hours give it take (I died a lot, I thought I could take a guy—I couldn’t.) just to get to the opening credits.

I find the game to look great, the villages and lands looks lived-in and for the forests that are not as touched by mankind, they are the most thick and forest looking forests I have seen in a game. If there are no mini map, I would have been lost for sure. The characters can looks stiff and awkward. They will be in the middle of a conversation and they are looking down or away, or facing you with their eyes looking down like you have something in your teeth and they are unsure if they should tell you or not.

Some parts of the story seem to go on forever, and I never know if I can break away from it  or not. I have been on a mission that I don’t think ends…it just keeps going and going. I Just want to get to the next stage, something to make the story feel fresh again. Not that I am not enjoying it, it is like I still like this flavor of chip, but if I throw in a new flavor just to mix it up a little.

The saving system is poor, to save you either need to buy a expansive item, or sleep in your own bed or inn. You does auto save at key moments in missions but they seem far between. I have lost many hours due to dying or the one time my power went out. I would like to see them tweak it just a little to make it a little more forgiving and so I can feel a little more safe. I saved in front of a chest to make sure I don’t break all my lock picks, so I used the item that lets me save. I break all the lock picks…so I reload I start again but this time the room that was empty is not longer empty and I have to reload again due to being caught.

Lock picking isn’t fun, it pulls me out from the game. You find the sweet spot with the right joystick and rotate with the left while moving the right stick  with the left to keep it in the sweet spot and not cause damage to the lock pick or breaking it. It just isn’t smooth, I am sure once you level up that skill it gets better and more enjoyable, I am not there yet and it pulls me out of the game.
